Guangzhou and Foshan, two cities with a longstanding history of close ties, launched the first Guangfo Intangible Cultural Heritage Week on January 15 to celebrate the upcoming Lunar New Year. The event features various activities aimed at promoting the inheritance and innovation of excellent traditional culture in the Guangfo region.

The opening ceremony, held at Huadiwan Life Center, kicked off a week-long celebration. The theme, revolving around the auspicious spirit of the Year of the Dragon, resonated with the deep cultural heritage of the Chinese people. Decorations, stalls, and exhibits in the event all featured the imagery of the dragon, which symbolizes good luck and prosperity.

Five outstanding intangible cultural heritage products from Guangzhou’s Liwan and Foshan’s Nanhai were unveiled during the opening ceremony, highlighting the link between intangible heritage and daily life. The event also hosted a forum discussing the future of intangible cultural heritage development in Guangzhou and Foshan, bringing together experts, scholars, and practitioners from both cities.

Wang Yunting, Deputy Head of Liwan District said at the opening ceremony that, "Liwan District is committed to promoting cooperation with Nanhai, contributing to the overall strength and influence of intangible cultural heritage in Guangfo. The event, which serves as a testament to the ever-deepening friendship between Guangzhou and Foshan, aligns with their joint efforts to establish a model area for the inheritance and innovation of excellent traditional culture."

The event featured traditional performances including the dragon dance, and local art forms such as Cantonese opera. A performance combining traditional lion dance and drumming, titled "Harmonious Lion Roaring in the Tide," enthralled the audience and contributed to the festive atmosphere of the Lunar New Year.

Main highlights during the week include a vibrant Intangible Cultural Heritage Market, a showcase of selected Guangdong intangible cultural heritage products, discussions on innovative development, and exhibitions by master artisans. The opening ceremony also witnessed the awarding of certificates to representative inheritors of intangible cultural heritage in Liwan and Nanhai districts.

The market provided an interactive experience for citizens, featuring diverse areas such as unique delicacies, exquisite craftsmanship, traditional Chinese medicine consultations, and displays of time-honored brands. Additionally, an exhibition in the indoor venue showcased representative intangible cultural heritage projects from Liwan District, providing visitors with an immersive journey into the world of intangible heritage.
